Penny offense: Man fined for paying fee in pennies
By far and large this has to be the most ridiculous charge yet. If pennies are legitimate U.S. currency, I see no reason why a person cannot pay in pennies. So it’s an inconvenience to the person receiving the “cash”, but little do they know, you did try to pay, and if they refuse the cash then that’s on them. WHAT WILL PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT NEXT?

No lucky pennies here: Police have charged Jason West, an aggrieved medical patient in Vernal, Utah, with disorderly conduct. His alleged crime? Attempting to pay a disputed medical bill of $25 entirely in pennies.
The story, reported in the Salt Lake City Deseret News, describes the “penny offense” this way: West, 38, did not believe he owed the medical clinic $25 but came in to pay the fee in person. He first asked the clinic staff if the facility accepted cash payments, and then dumped 2,500 pennies onto the counter and demanded that they be counted.
But West apparently hadn’t counted on the clinic calling the police; the arresting officer contended that West’s protest served “no legitimate purpose.” The charge carries a fine that can go as high as $140–and there’s no word as yet on what currency West will use to pay it.
West isn’t alone in the ranks of penny protesters. A wise guy in Frederick, Maryland, showed up at the county clerk’s office last summer with bags of cash to pay off his tax bill with $966.86 in change.
And a New Jersey school district a few years back punished 29 students who paid for their $2 school lunches in pennies–possibly as a prank–with two-day detentions. After parents protested, the students were pardoned. The school explained that the use of the small change slowed down the lunch line.

Earthquake prediction can be a grave, and faulty science, and in the case of Italian seismologists who are being tried for the manslaughter of the people who died in the 2009 L’Aquila quake, it can have legal consequences.
The group of seven, including six seismologists and a government official, reportedly didn’t alert the public ahead of time of the risk of the L’Aquila earthquake, which occurred on April 6 of that year, killing around 300 people, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
But most scientists would agree it’s not their fault they couldn’t predict the wrath of Mother Nature.
“We’re not able to predict earthquakes very well at all,” John Vidale, a Washington State seismologist and professor at the University of Washington, told LiveScience.
Even though advances have been made, the day scientists are able to forecast earthquakes is still “far away,” Dimitar Ouzounov, a professor of earth sciences at Chapman University in California, said this month regarding the prediction of the March 11 earthquake in Japan.
L’Aquila faults
The decision to try the six members of a committee tasked with determining the risk of an earthquake in the area (along with a government official) was announced on Wednesday (May 25) by Judge Giuseppe Romano, according to a news article from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Some people said the committee should’ve seen it coming, because of the earthquake swarms that occurred days before the big one struck, Vidale said.
“We get swarms of earthquakes all the time without a big earthquake. There was nothing strange about this swarm to suggest a big earthquake,” Vidale said in a telephone interview. [Album: This Millennium's Destructive Earthquakes]
Regarding the charges against the Italian seismologists, Vidale said “we’re offended” that they are being charged with a crime “for telling the truth.” That truth is, he added, there was nothing to say that the level of danger was enough to warrant any public action.
Why we can’t see one coming
Talking with Vidale, one gets the impression that predicting an earthquake would take a miracle, as there are so many unknowns.
“One problem is we don’t know how much stress it takes to break a fault,” Vidale said. “Second we still don’t know how much stress is down there. All we can do is measure how the ground is deforming.” Not knowing either of these factors makes it pretty tough to figure out when stresses will get to the point of a rupture, and an earth-shaking quake, he explained.
To get measurements of the actual stresses, researchers have to drill miles beneath the surface — an engineering feat on its own — and would only be able to drill a couple places to put sensors along the fault. (Drilling has been done along the San Andreas fault, but no one has measured the stress at depth there, Vidale said.)
On top of all that, the L’Aquila region is a particularly complex nut to crack geologically. While mostly horizontal strike-slip faults, like the San Andreas, are much clearer faults to analyze, the L’Aquila fault system is complex, with several so-called “normal” faults moving mostly vertically.
And several tectonic processes are active in the region: The Adria micro-plate is being subducted under the Apennines from east to west, while at the same time continental collision is occurring between the Eurasia and Africa plates (responsible for the building of the Alps).
Digging into the past
With all the downers, earthquake prediction science, it seems, is coming back into fashion after a lull in the 80s when methods weren’t showing any success, Vidale said. The key is to find some strange phenomenonthat occurs before, days before, an earthquake, that seismologists can recognize.
While they haven’t found any silver bullet, scientists are digging up data on past earthquakes along fault systems to give them an idea of the probability another will occur. Even so, probability of an earthquake coming “doesn’t help with predictions a day before an earthquake,” Vidale said.
Another method involves detecting evidence of unusual amounts of radon gas in the atmosphere. Right before an earthquake, the fault may release more gases, including radon. In fact, Ouzounov and colleagues found such anomalous signatures in the atmosphere above Japan days before the March 11 quake struck.
No one has ever predicted an earthquake from atmospheric data, and plenty of supposed earthquake precursors, from weird animal behaviorto groundwater flowing the wrong way, have proven hit-or-miss.
Of the radon gas method, Vidale said, “now we’re pretty confident that’s not reliable.”

In the small town of Orcutt, California, a
private association has raised donations to erect a flagpole and monument
between a highway exit and a park-and-ride lot, at the entrance to the
community’s Old Town section. The pole would hang the American flag, encircled
by five pillars, one each for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and
Coast Guard. The California Department of Transportation (CalTrans), however,
has stymied the effort, calling it an impermissible act of “public
expression.”

reports that, although the Old Town Orcutt Revitalization Association (OTORA)
“intends its flag as a tribute and symbol of freedom” – which would
seem to be how most Americans would view their nation’s flag – “CalTrans
sees it as a form of speech or expression, something more personal than
patriotic.”
Royal Wedding
It seems that those of negative wavelengths have nothing better to do these days then to bash others for their way of living their life.
Take for instance all the press about Kate Middleton and the Prince being just wed. Some try to make a buck off their status while others find every flaw because of something good in what is happening around them.
From pizzas to the strangely made hats that some of those onlookers wore I feel might have stunned the crowd more than the constant bickering of how Kate’s sister wore white as well.
No one ever mentioned the children that wore white, nor did they stop to think that it all matched and went together beautifully.
It is her sister for god sake.
Not to mention this is the way “THEY” wanted their wedding, so get over it.
Someone had the audacity to mention that Kate now bares the very same ring that the late Princess Diana wore.
In addition, your point is what. I look at it as a tribute to someone past and very special taken from this earth in a tragic manner and all for what.
Greed, injustice, stupidity.
God only knows about this tragedy, and if you ask me, I feel that this wedding was amazing.
Set a mile stone for the future of the royal family, bringing back life to royalty and someone who was lost tragically and suddenly, not to mention; they did it there way and that’s how it should be.

Honoring the COX Cable Company
I was watching a movie on the television today. A lazy Sunday, when I saw a commercial come on the tv about the COX Cable Company. It’s amazing how in today’s world, people in societies tend to neglect to one another on a daily basis but yet seemed to come together in extreme tragic situations. Although many of us generally are good people, we still find the masses that want to do us all harm regardless of the situation.
I was amazed at the stable commercial, which touched my heart to a for hurt a spokesperson come over the television making a statement that “in times of need in the wake of Japan’s troubles, something as simple as a family’s voice can lessen the burden of this tragedy and it is why we here at Cox cable find a rewarding to give free long-distance phone calls to the people in Japan in this time of eight.” I somehow felt compelled to give up myself as well you know I had nothing to give but yet I do. My prayers a lot to those who have lost their loved ones in the life they once knew as a result of many changes our lives and the planet places upon us. I dares go out to those who survived, and that your hopes and dreams will become reality someday soon so that you can get on with your lives despite this tragic loss and I prayed at the rest of the world even for just a moment to write for those in desperate need.
“Not please help those in Japan who have suffered so much and are in need of our assistance as humans. For those that have passed, please forgive them of their sins and carry them to the father in your loving arms, AMEN.”
Government Shutdown
“All sides claimed victory after the last-minute budget accord, but tough negotiations lay ahead.”
This is the headlines that come from the news media that a government shutdown has been averted with all sides claim a victory?????? REALLY! A victory to what? Being dumb asses for not doing what the American people ask you to do when we elect you into office of a victory for winning your own agendas.
It should not have come to this and nothing should have been averted given the fact that our very own greed stricken government with their hidden agendas have purposely caused this issue in the first place.
Many claim to be the so-called experts at this or that, yet a two-year old could run this country better than our government officials right now. The era of broken promises and deception within the government has taken on an all new meaning for the millennia and “we the people” are going to literally pay for it for the rest of our lives due to the ignorance of those we elected to be in charge.
Some say to blame the president. I say why blame just him. I say blame all the politicians that are in office right now. They will all get their paychecks when things shut down, where as the people will suffer again and again with total disregard for human life on this planet.
American spends so much time paying and worrying about the rest of the world that our own government forgot who they really work for. Just in case they did forget, lets remind them…IT’S AMERICAN’S not yourself.
Take for instance the oil and gas prices that have literally jumped in days to record highs; while the companies and governments get fat rich off our minuscule dollars that we bust our collect asses to earn to pay for that gas. We have spoken up repeatedly for decades as to why solar and wind power is not used and electric or solar cars that are pollution free and actually work are not built or used. Here’s the real answer. The government wants to “STAY RICH” while you suffer daily.
Start drilling here in America and stop talking about it. Just freakin’ do it. You say we need to stop depending on the other countries oil, well here’s the solution. We have plenty here and we can build factories and create millions of jobs here for oil, solar, solar wind, etc. MILLIONS of JOBs and INCOME. You can GET RICH right here in America.
Here’s what I’d do if I were elected the King of America. Not the president, but the King. This means I’d have all the say for what the people wanted and needed and all politicians and the president would report to me so that I ould report to the people.
First, I’d pull out our troops as promised from 90% of the countries we don’t need to be in and stop bullying those countries and sticking our nose where it doesn’t belong.
Next, I’d use those soldiers and other “AMERICANS” to create massive job right here in America, not overseas; such as putting in solar power everywhere, making things, building things, maintaining things and becoming the example for others countries to follow not look down upon. I’d of course, trade goods back and forth given some things are needed to be made elsewhere, but come on now; everything being created outside the United States is just ridiculous.
I’d buy back and stop selling off American assets such as the car companies and major corporations to people outside our country. Bringing back the factories and work to America where it started in the first place. I’d start back up the rebuilding of American infrastructure that has fallen to record lows and poverty levels.
I’d stop trying to go to the terrorists and let them come to us; wasting / spending their time and money to get to us if they can, then snatch their collective asses up and deal with them like they need to be dealt with. (NOT TRY THEM IN OUR COURTS) They are not Americans and have no “RIGHTS” to our system, unless they are an American citizen and earned that right.
I’d stop giving away our social security and social nets that “AMERICAN’S” pay into and stop giving it to those that aren’t even citizen’s due to a freakin’ loophole tactic. “You no pay into the system, you no get!”
I’d stop this press one for english crap and make all the others who “choose” to live here learn ENGLISH! Not the other way around. We don’t need to accommodate them, they need to accommodate themselves by learning our spoken language. We have to learn other languages and cultures when we travel or need assistance, so why not do the same here. Stop babying them and make them learn our ways.
I’d stop laying off teachers and start a massive rehire and get the kids back on track. Since the government wants to tell everyone that our children’s futures are in jeopardy and we are falling behind. Well here is the answer numb-nuts. Stop and look right at it and rehire teachers. Stop shutting down schools and open more. Educate the children, not take it away from them. Only a two-year old can figure this one out.
These are just a few of the simple things that can be done to correct this jacked up system of our. If you want it fixed…Don’t vote for anyone that runs in the elections at all. If anything vote for me and I’m not even running. I’ll drink my coffee on the porch like anyone else, and I’ll do the job for free. Just make sure I have my coffee daily and take care of me as I take care of you. Simple right? Not so fast the other side states. Now let’s hear their side of baffling B.S.

Auditions are now being held for ”The practical guide for military spouse”.
We are in one all in one team now any age range from 16 – 26 years of age, who has a strong voice, can read and articulate with enthusiasm to create a professional military training video.
Applicants must submit contact information with résumé and verifiable training information. There is no application fee to audition for this casting. We do not discriminate against race creed color or religion, so all ethnic groups are eligible to apply between the age range stated above.
This video is for any and all prior military spouses both male and female, who wanted another basic information or ever entering into the military structured lifestyle as the spouse of a soldier. Learning what you’re getting into first he or are you go and commit yourself to that relationship is key and a central to assisting one another in your relationship with the military and one another.
Actors and spokes models must submit a photograph, contact information, and résumé. Say are allowed unless you are contacted directly by the casting director or the agency itself.
